One lane of U.S. 24 reopened Monday night to alternating traffic — including bicyclists — as crews over the weekend made progress on the 100-foot-deep sinkhole that closed the highway over Tennessee Pass.
The work is expected to be complete and both lanes opened by Aug. 6.
For now, flaggers will direct traffic through the area around mile marker 165 between Leadville and Red Cliff, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. Motorists should expect delays of up to 10 minutes.
The hole appeared June 9 on the shoulder of U.S. 24.
The contractor Hayward Baker will continue the repair work seven days a week. Barring problems, repairs should be complete before the USA Pro Challenge plans to go through the area on Aug. 23, CDOT said.
The Copper Triangle bicycle race will be able to use U.S. 24 Saturday and Sunday.
Leadville’s annual Boom Days celebration also is this weekend so CDOT is reminding U.S. 24 travelers to watch for cyclists.
