COLORADO SPRINGS –  —Less than a year after starting Kangaroo Coffee, D.J. and Rue Lyon have made a big jump — buying property that will allow them to open a second location and warehouse later this year.

The Colorado Springs couple opened their first coffee stand at 434 W. Fillmore St. in September and recently bought a 0.75-acre site across from a Wal-Mart Supercenter on South Eighth Street. They plan on demolishing at least one of the two small buildings on the site where they want to build a kiosk with two drive-through lanes and either move or replace the other building to house a warehouse for both locations and perhaps another retail tenant.

The couple started Kangaroo Coffee after moving to Colorado Springs from Oregon, where Rue Lyon was a massage therapist and D.J. Lyon was a decorative concrete builder. They hope to open even more locations in the Springs and elsewhere.

“We started researching communities four or five years ago where we would like to raise a family and selected Colorado Springs. Coffee is my husband’s passion, so we decided to open a coffee shop here,” Rue Lyon said. “We see ourselves as coffee bartenders.”
