
“A horse is a horse of course, of course” unless it’s Joey, the astonishing creation of South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company and the equine-puppet star of “War Horse.”
The Tony Award-winning play will be the first Broadway show out of the gate when the Denver Center Attraction’s 2013-2014 season kicks off in January.
The season was announced Thursday evening at the Denver Center for Performing Arts’ Donald R. Seawell Ballroom.
In a move to get its theatrical season in sync with the fiscal calendar, is offering an extended schedule. It runs from January 2013 to June 2014 with 17 productions.
Approach it accordingly — with a steady, measured trot, not a full-on gallop.
Among the riches: The Tony Award-winning musical “Once,” based on the , Tony darling “Peter and the Starcatcher.”
Also, “Catch Me If You Can,” a film-to-stage romp based on the story of a teenage conman who made piles of cash in the 1960s, the costume extravaganza “Priscilla Queen of the Desert,” and the habit-clad musical “Sister Act.”
More: A revamped version of the musical “Jekyll & Hyde,” plus “Million Dollar Quartet,” about the once-in-a-lifetime gathering of music greats Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley.
The Garner Galleria cabaret will host the country- western parody-homage “The Doyle & Debbie Show.” And the Denver Center Theatre Company’s Stage Theatre will be home to the world premiere of workshopped during its Colorado New Play Summit.
Of the 17 productions, six are not included in the subscription package: “Chicago,” “Spamalot,” Blue Man Group, “Mary Poppins,” “Les Misérables,” and “Traces.”
