SAN FRANCISCO — Dexter Fowler looked more like a mummy than a center fielder Saturday, his lower back wrapped in ice. Fowler was scratched from the lineup with spasms, and was unsure if he will be available Sunday.
“I don’t know yet,” Fowler said. “It was weird. I reached up for a flyball (Friday) and felt pain on both sides of my back.”
Fowler is enjoying a breakout season — .376 on-base percentage — but has stumbled of late. He has just four extra-base hits in 91 at-bats since the all-star break.
Eric Young Jr. started in center field and went 2-for-5. He’s batting .296 and is 10-for-22 on the trip.
Escalona out. Edgmer Escalona’s opportunity to make an impression was put on ice with his sore right triceps. The right-hander was placed on the disabled list, replaced by Will Harris, a Rockies draft pick who has doggedly come all the way back from elbow surgery. Harris will wear No. 48. Escalona said, “It’s sad that I am not able to pitch. But I don’t want to hurt it worse.”
Footnotes. Jhoulys Chacin started in Triple-A on Saturday. He’s a candidate to rejoin the rotation, but only if he shows improvement from his recent rehab outings. … Todd Helton had surgery Friday to repair a torn hip labrum, and a bone spur was shave down. Troy E. Renck, The Denver Post
