DENVER—Lawmakers are listening to some of the people affected by a May wildfire that killed three people and damaged two dozen houses southwest of Denver.

The lawmakers toured the burn area Monday, then heard from Conifer residents, some of whom are seeking accountability.

A five-member commission created by the Legislature this year is reviewing the events surrounding the wildfire that grew out of a prescribed burn on state forest land. It flared a few days after it appeared to be extinguished. The Lower North Fork Fire caused at least $11 million in property damage.

The legislative panel may recommend how the state can improve its response to future blazes.

A separate bill passed this year allows victims of that wildfire to seek compensation in excess of a state liability cap.
