A Wednesday meeting among elected officials to continue general discussions about Denver’s Airport City plans and how they relate to a 24-year-old intergovernmental agreement will be held behind closed doors.

“The open-meeting requirement applies to local public bodies,” said Amber Miller, a spokeswoman for Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, who is hosting the meeting. “This is not a formal body. It’s a smaller, working meeting.”

In addition to Hancock, mayors from Aurora, Commerce City and Brighton and a commissioner from Adams County will attend without support staff.

Miller said the meeting is intended to discuss “a shared, mutual vision and some goals to then plan to move forward” — not specifics about the Airport City plans, or specific areas that may violate the intergovernmental agreement, IGA.

The Airport City plan is part of a larger Aerotropolis plan Hancock rolled out last year to spur regional development.

Last month, surrounding city mayors and Adams County commissioners sent Hancock a letter stating that from their understanding of the plan, .

The IGA was written and approved by Adams County voters in 1988 to allow Denver to annex almost 45 square miles of land for DIA. The pact outlined strict guidelines on any further development on airport land and surrounding the airport.

Adams County commissioners last week held a closed meeting of their own under executive session to get legal advice about the issue.
