A mother bear and her three cubs were in a temporary hangout along the Tucker Gulch Trail in Golden on Thursday, according to a news release from the city.
Police and officials from the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife set up barricades along the streets and trail Thursday to keep people away.
Wildlife officers hope they will make their way out of the neighborhood.
“We want them to move out on their own naturally,” wildlife manager Vicki Vargas-Madrid said. “It’s not always successful tranquilizing that many bears, and the drugs are really hard on the cubs.”
In late summer, bears prepare for hibernation, consuming as many as 10,000 calories a day.
“This is definitely the time of years when bears are working to pack on the pounds,” Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman Jennifer Churchill said. “We have bears moving about, and it’s time to be extra-vigilant.”
