Fashion trends for fall are wide-reaching. You can dress in various styles: rich, lady-like, military, mannish, or in an artsy, abstract way. Add a few items to put a new spin on what you already own or create a totally new look. Here are some ideas, from , a Boulder-based image consultant who will be doing a seminar Sept. 29 at Nordstrom Rack in Broomfield (see box for details).

1. Color-wise, check out all the oxblood and maroon-type reds. Deep, rich jeweled or forest hues are also strong. Flashes of brights, particularly sapphire blues, remain in the mix. Whites are the surprise, and showed up on the high-fashion runways.

2. Fabrics are lush and rich-looking. All things leather, whether real or nearly impossible-to-tell faux, dominate. Consider velvets, suedes and jacquards plus shimmer finishes, sheer, lace and crochet. Sophisticated pattern themes are also worth adding: look for rich botanicals as well as traditional foulards.

3. New versions of the basics are good wardrobe additions. Suits are again an option, so add a jacket to a classic skirt or trouser. The peplum-style top or jacket (a bodice with fitted waist and a flared band or ruffle over the hip) is popular again. Girly fabrics make it feminine; structured fabrics make it tailored. Check out all types of blouses as well as menswear-style shirts. The sweater set revives a retro favorite plus does double wardrobe duty when worn as separates.

4. Coat options abound, from classics to cocoon shapes. Try them on over jackets or sweaters you are likely to wear or layer underneath, then check the ease of movement. Pick a style that suits you best.

5. Accessories provide a fast, inexpensive update. Consider brooches, chokers or pearls in big, bold, rich-looking faux stones. Beaded drop earrings rule. Or, consider clean, geometric shapes, in exaggerated scale. Make hats, gloves and scarves personality picks. Don’t overlook boots as both fashion and practical necessities. Choose from ankle-high to over-the-knee, plus flat, wedge or chunky heels.
