All but seven of the 195 gas meters in knocked out by unexplained water in Denver’s Mayfair neighborhood have been restored, an Xcel spokesperson said late Wednesday night.

Spokesman Mark Stutz said some work will remain Thursday, including replacing meters and relighting pilot lights at the homes that could not be completed Wednesday.

The cause of water filling gas lines rday morning is still unknown, but the company has put in monitoring systems to watch for water’s return, he said.

“We have not yet determined the source of the water or the point at which it was entering our system,” he said.

Xcel crews will replace all the affected meters and relight pilot lights at the homes.

Residents were without hot water and their gas stoves in an area bounded by Fairfax and Holly streets, East 12th Avenue and Severn Place, as well as some residents along Holly from Severn to East Sixth Avenue.

On Wednesday, Xcel crews blew a mix of nitrogen and methanol through lines hoping to dry up the main pipes. They are preparing to do a second purge Wednesday afternoon, in hopes of getting service restored to the east Denver neighborhood by evening.

The problem with water is that it can split the pipes and cause rust. “It clogs up the meters, clogs up the lines,” Stutz said.
