NEW YORK — The federal government is examining two separate incidents in which passenger seats came loose midflight on American Airlines planes in the last three days. American said Monday that it would inspect those and six other Boeing 757 jets overnight.

A Boston-to-Miami flight had to make an emergency landing Saturday at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport. Flight 685 landed safely. Then Monday, an American flight from New York to Miami returned to JFK after loose seats were discovered.

The incidents involved separate repair facilities and groups of American and contract workers, airline spokeswoman Andrea Huguely said. Boeing declined to comment.

The seats are the latest challenge as American struggles with delayed flights and prepares to lay off more than 4,000 workers as part of a bankruptcy restructuring.
