The South Suburban Park and Recreation District feels like it has been hung out to dry.
About 60 towels a week — or 3,120 towels a year — are stolen from the recreation district.
So many in fact, that management has organized the first ever “Towel Round-Up Day,” Oct. 17.
“For the most part, we think people taking them is an honest mistake, but we can’t absorb the costs anymore,” said South Suburban spokeswoman Jamie DeBartolomeis. “No pun intended.”
South Suburban will spend close to $20,000 this year replacing towels, she said.
“The problem is growing and growing,” DeBartolomeis said.
Should the problem not subside, district recreation centers will discontinue providing towels free of charge, DeBartolomeis said.
Towels are provided at the Buck, Goodson, Lone Tree and Sheridan recreation centers.
During facility hours on the round-up day, wayward towels can be exchanged for a prize.
No questions asked, DeBartolomeis said.
