If you haven’t planned your New Year’s Eve and can tolerate body-shaking bass, then there’s hope for you yet. As always, Denver is swelling with options for electronic dance music fans looking for fun on the big night. Here are five worth looking into:
5) Amon Tobin DJ Set at City Hall
For the electronically-inclined, is the classiest option available. The Brazilian-by-way-of-Montreal breakbeat producer received light praise for 2011’s “ISAM,” only to be outdone by the incredible stage design of the album’s accompanying tour. While his cubic habitat is unlikely to be present for a simple DJ set, at least there’s little doubting his taste.
4) Klutch Beat’s “Valley of the Kings” at Beta
Denver’s Klutch Beat is topping off a weekly residency at Beta with an Egyptian-themed set. This crew’s mash-ups are drawn mostly from the standard well of chart hip-hop, so don’t expect too much of a different vibe.
3) ManCub at Larimer Lounge
Pictureplane might have thrown his last New Year’s bash in Denver, but newcomers have been quick to move into the void. Among them is . Heavy as he is on the breezy chillwave beats of yesteryear, ManCub is still pretty fun. The man behind the moniker is Alex Anderson, who parted ways with band mate Danny Stillman earlier this year before releasing a new EP, “Business Dogs.”
2) 3OH!3 at the Gothic
New Year’s Eve in Colorado wouldn’t be complete without doing their thing somewhere within state lines. Fresh tracks from the upcoming “Omens” reveal they’ve yet to part ways with the aggressively dumb dance music that won them a global audience a few years ago. If you’re one of the few old enough to get past the front door without the double black marks of doom, be sure to knock a few back before attempting any self-reflection. It’ll ensure a more positive evening.
1) STS9 at the Fillmore Auditorium
More so than anywhere else in Denver, New Years’ most depraved are likely to emerge from the pits of the . It’s here that will spend the last hours of 2012 wrapping up “Time Within Evolving Living Vehicle Earth,” a three-night series at the venue. Forgive them the title and enjoy picking out those in the crowd who’ve clearly shown up to all three evenings.
