The former Broomfield High School basketball player, who leads the Iowa State team, was in shock, as many women would be when they see their beau hold out a ring.
During a break in the second half of Sunday’s game, the public address announcer at Hilton Coliseum told the 7,000 fans they should remain in their seats for a short ceremony after the game, but no specifics were given.
After the Cyclones’ win against Alabama State (the 6-foot-7 Prins had seven points and five rebounds), Prins’ boyfriend of three years, Ryan De Hamer, got a quick introduction from ISU coach Bill Fennelly, and went to midcourt. Prins’ parents and brother were in the crowd as well.
As the 6-8 De Hamer dropped to a knee, the shock and joy on Prins’ face was evident.
“I was crying,” . “I couldn’t have asked for a better place. … I was super shocked, but I’m so thankful Ryan decided to do it in Hilton, because that’s just going to be a special memory, having Coach be a part of it and my teammates.”
