U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette on Sunday urged Coloradans to enlist friends and family in an effort to get Congress to ban high-capacity magazines and take other steps.
“We have got to address the extraordinary gun violence that threatens our country,” DeGette, a Denver Democrat, who introduced legislation to ban the magazines, said at a news conference.
State Rep. Rhonda Fields, whose son, Javad Marshall-Fields, was gunned down shortly before he was scheduled to testify in a murder trial, also appeared.
Fields said she will introduce legislation in the state House that would close a loophole that allows guns to be sold privately in the state without background checks, and a second bill to ban high-capacity magazines.
“I’m here because I am a mom,” said the Aurora Democrat. “I wasn’t able to save my son. … I’m here to say enough is enough.”
