ARBOLES, Colo.—The Coast Guard auxiliary and Colorado Parks and Recreation are stepping up enforcement of recreation rules at Navajo Lake because of a large number of water-related deaths in the area.
Auxiliary spokesman Robert Hedges says there were 11 fatalities in the Durango area in 2011. They include fatal incidents on the Pine, Animas, Piedra and Dolores rivers and Navajo Lake involving boating, diving, rafting and swimming.
According to the Durango Herald ( ), Colorado and New Mexico state park rangers, New Mexico state police and members of the auxiliary will be on the alert for lack of safety equipment, intoxicated boaters and boater age and certification violations.
