Jordan Scott. (Karl Gehring, The Denver Post)
Many assumed the loss of Josh Scott meant Lewis-Palmer would not be able to repeat as champion.
Well, Jordan Scott picked up right where his older brother left off — and, as the best player in Class 4A, led the Rangers to a repeat.
After the win, Jordan said of Josh while laughing, “I can rub it in his face a little bit. I got my own without him.”
Scott, a senior, averaged 18.0 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.7 steals per game this season. His length made for a nightmare matchup defensively, and his tendency to come through in the clutch during the tournament earned the respect of opposing coaches along the way.

Kain Lucero. (Andy Cross, The Denver Post)
All Kain Lucero needed was the big stage.
There were rumblings across the state about the kid in the state’s southwest corner leading the Pagosa Springs Pirates.
Once he got to Moby Arena in Fort Collins and the Class 3A state tournament, it was safe to say his stock took off.
The senior point guard, named the 3A player of the year, led the Pirates to their first state championship since 1960 by averaging 18.5 points and 6.1 assists for coach Randy Sorenson.
“He is not only a great player, but a great kid,” Sorenson said. “He is a leader.”
That leadership may have further separated him from the pack. Lucero’s teammates carried him off the court after the Pirates beat Kent Denver in the 3A title game.

Alex Terpstra.
Sure the scoring numbers are flashy for Denver Christian’s Alex Terpstra.
But the intangibles are what separates the Crusaders senior from the rest.
He averaged more than 19 points per game — including 26 in the Great Eight against Yuma in Pueblo — and was instrumental in leading Denver Chrstian to its second consecutive title in Class 2A. For that, he was named the 2A player of the year.
“He figured out way to score other than the 3-point shot,” Van Heukelem said. “He’s so smart and knows to hold the ball until he ets fouled.”
Televison analysts would call Terpstra a “stat stuffer.” The points were going to come, but the guard’s 4.6 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.5 steals and even 1.1. blocks per game were indicative of the “little things” that won games.

Cody Canfield.
Just one look at the McClave team picture in the CHSAA program tells you all you need to know about Cody Canfield.
The 6-foot-5 Class 1A player of the year is proudly standing with his team, kind of off to the side a bit, enough so that you can see the added accessory to his uniform — knee pads.
Canfield is the kind of player that looks at each game as a battle and he’s going to go out there and literally leaves everything on the court to get his team the win.
In the state title game against favored Shining Mountain, the Cardinals’ big man scored 17 points, pulled down 12 rebounds, altered several shots and didn’t even play the final five minutes after fouling out.
