ASPEN, Colo.—The city of Aspen is restarting efforts next week to drill a test well assessing the potential for geothermal energy more than 1,000 feet below the surface.

Aspen officials said Wednesday that they had reached a deal with a drilling company to continue work that started in of 2011. At that time, a contractor drilled to 1,080 feet, but did not reach water.

According to the Aspen Daily News ( ), drillers will attempt to reach 1,500 feet below the ground and will stop if water is not found by that point.
