DENVER—Transportation officials say passengers came out in droves Saturday to ride the latest light rail spur from Denver to Golden.
Regional Transportation District spokeswoman Lisa Trujillo says the agency estimated 35,000 passenger trips on the West Line on Saturday. That count was tallied at 6 p.m., and the line remained open past midnight. Rides were free Friday and Saturday to celebrate the opening.
RTD expects about 20,000 passenger trips on the line each weekday.
Trains on the 12-mile spur began running Friday from Union Station in downtown Denver to Golden. It’s the first light rail line that’s part of RTD’s multibillion dollar transit expansion known as FasTracks.
The line cost $709.8 million, and about $300 million of that was funded by the Federal Transit Administration.
