DENVER—A man detained in a case of mistaken identity has filed a federal lawsuit accusing Colorado Springs police of injuring him when they handcuffed him while he was recovering from shoulder surgery.

John Sturgis said police were looking for a murder suspect when they stopped him last year. He was handcuffed and later released when police realized they had the wrong man.

According to the Denver Post ( ), Sturgis says he told police he had surgery on his left shoulder a month earlier and asked the officers to be careful.

The city attorney’s office says the officers acted properly and there was no excessive force.
