ASPEN, Colo.—A work crew from the Rifle Correctional Center has finished trimming chokecherry and serviceberry shrubs at a campground near Aspen in an attempt to prevent bear encounters this summer.

The U.S. Forest Service banned the use of tents and fabric trailers or campers at the Difficult Campground last May because of problems with bears foraging for food there. Also last summer, a bear sat on a tent in the night to get at berries, surprising the campers inside.

Kevin Wright, district wildlife manager with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, tells The Aspen Daily News ( ) the campground is a “fairly notorious site for bear encounters.”
