With school almost out, cinemas are announcing their low-cost kids’ summer series. Harkins Theatres Northfield 18 Summer Movie Fun season tickets are $5 for 10 films, one a week (Monday to Friday, you pick the day) at 9:45 a.m. from May 27 through Aug. 2. This year’s lineup: “Mirror Mirror,” “Madagascar 3,” “Ice Age 4: Continental Drift,” “Charlotte’s Web,” “March of the Penguins,” “Hotel Transylvania,” “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax,” “Rise of the Guardians,” “Megamind” and “The Pirates.” Single tickets are available the day of show for $2. It’s not a gig with Donald Trump, but DIY-ers can join the McGuckin Hardware Apprentice Series. Every other Saturday, a McGuckin “green vest” expert demonstrates how to make a cool project, such as PVC lawn furniture or a hula hoop, using common items found in the Boulder hardware store. A pine planter box is on tap for Saturday. Future projects include a plumbing pipe candelabra and LED bike lights. Starlight, star bright…

On Saturday, the Denver Astronomical Society gathers for its monthly Open House at DU’s historic Chamberlin Observatory in Observatory Park starting at dusk (about 8 p.m.). Members set up their telescopes and share for free with anyone interested in looking at stars, planets, galaxies, nebulae, maybe E.T.? (OK, maybe not). You can even view the heavens through the observatory’s famous 20-inch telescope for $1 per person. 2930 E. Warren Ave.
