president and CEO Craig Piper has resigned, citing personal reasons.

Piper, who is credited with developing the massive exhibit and managing and designing the zoo’s new master plan, will leave his post June 1.

He began at the zoo in 1997 as director of education and volunteer services. In 2000, he was named vice president of planning and capital projects. He became the zoo’s chief operating officer in 2005.

The Denver Zoological Foundation Board of Trustees will conduct a national search to fill the position.
