Two of the bands here in Colorado this week show different generations of indie-pop. who’s just hitting its most mainstream stride plays Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Monday. Then the next day, Yo La Tengo who has stayed consistent since the mid ’80s plays in Boulder. Along with these two young and old indie treasures, we have some electronic music and some downright rock in our picks of Colorado’s best shows this week.
4) Black Rebel Motorcycle Club — Monday, Gothic Theatre, $25-$30
To be part of the you first need to look the part — black sunglasses, jeans and leather will do the trick. As moody as you’d expect someone dressed like this to be, BRMC wears its persona well and has done so religiously since the early 2000s. In support of its March release, “Specter at the Feast,” the California rock band plays at the Gothic Theatre on Monday.
3) Black Moth Super Rainbow — Friday, Bluebird Theater, $17-$20
Denver has always loved . The experimental electronic act played our Underground Music Showcase in 2012, and it has a history of good attendance at Denver shows. So the sad news: The band’s frontman, Tom Fec, told us that it has no plans for another Black Moth Super Rainbow album. That means when the band plays the Bluebird Theater on Friday, it could be the last chance Denver gets to see Black Moth Super Rainbow live. (Tickets, $17-$20, via bluebirdtheater.net)
2) Yo La Tengo — Tuesday, Boulder Theater, $22-$25
There are few bands more reliable and pleasant than Yo La Tengo. We spoke with the band about how this formula, along with a bashful, insecure attitude toward making music has kept the indie-rockers going for decades. On “Fade,” Yo La Tengo’s 13th album, it’s all calm, ’60s and ’70s psychedelic pop that’s as comforting as an old friend. Fuzzy guitars cut through the otherwise soft and cheerful melodic sensibilities on “Fade,” adding some darkness and depth to the light. Yo La Tengo brings a nearly endless catalog and years of live experience to the Boulder Theater on Tuesday.
1) Vampire Weekend — Monday, Red Rocks Amphitheatre
It was nice of Vampire Weekend to pencil in a show at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre along with its headlining spots at nearly every major festival this year. Earlier this week, the band released its mature, graceful third LP, “Modern Vampires of the City.” With this release, the band has grown up. Gone are the band’s frivolous, fun college days. Itap a highly anticipated album from a band that has yet to disappoint fans with its playful indie-pop. As such, Vampire Weekend’s Red Rocks show on Monday with Of Monsters and Men has been sold out for weeks. In fact, fans hadn’t even heard a single new song before scrambling for tickets. (Sold out)
