DENVER—A former Rhode Island mayor is bowing out of Colorado’s governor’s race after three days as a candidate.
Stephen P. Laffey said Friday that he is deferring to former Congressman Tom Tancredo, who announced his intention to run on the Republican ticket Thursday. Laffey said he agrees with most of Tancredo’s position and there was no need to run.
Laffey is the former mayor of Cranston, R.I. and a challenged that state’s U.S. Senator in a Republican primary in 2006. He moved to Colorado three years ago. On Wednesday he said he planned to run for governor in his new state.
Colorado’s Republican Secretary of State Scott Gessler is also mulling a run. The state’s current governor is Democrat John Hickenlooper.
