The number of nonfarm payroll jobs in metro Denver is expected to be revised upward by about 12,000, based on a Colorado Department of Labor and Employment analysis of fourth-quarter economic data, the department said Wednesday.

The analysis is based on employer reports filed with the Department of Labor and Employment, which include a count of workers at each business in Colorado and are available through the fourth-quarter 2012 Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages program.

Estimates for Colorado Springs and Greeley are expected to be revised up by about 2,300 and 1,900, respectively, the report said.

As a result of the upward revisions, the department estimates that as of April 2013, there were 1,285,600 nonfarm payroll jobs in Denver metro, 257,500 in Colorado Springs and 87,200 in Greeley.

Alexandra Hall, chief economist for the labor department, said the most heartening of the findings was the upward revision of 3,900 jobs during the fourth quarter in the construction industry.

“Construction really stands out as an industry,” Hall said. “That was a sector that was hit really hard by the Great Recession. …

“Construction lost about half of its employment base. So we see construction coming back and becoming more robust.”

Other industry sectors that are expected to undergo the greatest upward revisions are trade, transportation and utilities, up 3,300 jobs; and information, up 1,000.
