STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo.—Court records show the Routt County woman who allegedly shot and killed her 9-year-old son before shooting herself was in the process of separating from her husband.
A search warrant obtained by The Steamboat Pilot & Today () sheds light on what investigators think happened Wednesday at the home where Asher Lesyshen-Kirlan was found dead.
According to the warrant, Asher’s father called police around 3 a.m. and said his son had been shot but was breathing. Michael Kirlan, 46, said his wife was upstairs with a gun, telling him to come and kill her. Kirlan told 911 operators he did not feel safe.
When police arrived, the boy was dead, shot in the chest. He had been shot three times, according to the warrant.
His mother, Lisa Marie Lesyshen, was found unconscious in the master bedroom with a gunshot wound. Investigators later recovered three shell casings and a small revolver from where Lesyshen had been found.
Lesyshen was under police guard at an undisclosed hospital.
Asher was a third-grader at Soda Creek Elementary School in Steamboat Springs. Students were simply told Asher had died at home.
The school planned a meeting for parents Thursday evening to talk about how to discuss Asher’s death with their children. Mental health professionals, counselors and school administrators were expected to be on hand.
Counselors and others have also been made available for students and school staff who want to talk about the events.
