An Army-trained bystander rescued a man who was trying to swim across Prospect Lake about 3 p.m. Sunday.

Colorado Springs Fire Department Lt. Juliet Draper said the bystander had knowledge of water rescue procedures and first aid and helped the swimmer, pulling him to shore with a jet ski.

“I really thought I could make it across, but I got really exhausted about halfway through and realized I needed help,” said Matthew Lee Winkelman, 28, from Colorado Springs.

Winkelman told Colorado Springs Police and Fire Department crews he attempted to swim across the Memorial Park lake.
