The city of Boulder collected 2.55 tons of of myrtle spurge — a noxious weed that is illegal in the state — at the “Purge the Spurge” event earlier this month.

The event encouraged homeowners to rid their yards of the noxious weed by giving them free native plants in exchange. The city said it collected enough weeds to fill a 12-yard walk-in container.

“We were really happy with the turnout,” said Rella Abernathy, Boulder Integrated Pest Management coordinator. “And not just with the amount of people, but the amount of weeds they were bringing in.”

Abernathy said one homeowner even brought in 32 large bags of weeds.

“We had people really making an effort to get rid of their weeds,” Abernathy said.

The city introduced a new ordinance that went into effect Saturday that allows the ticketing of violators.
