Authorities are investigating the death of Mitchell Bowman, 18, who died after a crash on U.S. 85 near Weld County Road 33.
The Ault resident was driving his 1961 International pickup truck southbound on U.S. 85 about a mile east of Gilcrest in the far left acceleration lane about 1 p.m. Tuesday. The vehicle moved to the right and ran off the right side of the highway, across a narrow median and onto a driveway that ran parallel to the highway. It went across the driveway, collided with a wire fence and drove into an irrigation ditch, Colorado State Patrol spokesman Nate Reid said.
Bowman was taken to North Colorado Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:56 p.m.
He may have suffered a medical event that caused the crash, according to an email from the Weld County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
