Colorado is getting a cooldown for a couple of days, but forecasters expect temperatures to heat back up as summer nears.

Wednesday was an overcast day with a high of about 65 degrees, but Thursday is expected to get up to 77 degrees with isolated showers and thunderstorms after noon, according to the National Weather Service. Chance of precipitation is 10 percent.

Despite the weekend warm-up, this season does not mirror last year’s heat, said Mike Baker, meteorologist with the National Weather Service based in Boulder.

“We may not see the hot dome sitting over Colorado anytime soon,” he said. “But the ridge of high pressure will build in Colorado, raising temperatures by the weekend.”

Thursday night will be partly cloudy, with a low around 53 degrees and a 10 percent chance of precipitation, according to the weather service.

Friday is forecast for a high of 81 with a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon.

Saturday and Sunday are forecast to be around 86 degrees with Monday possibly reaching 90 degrees, according to the weather service.

Still, there is a possibility for cold weather in June and July, experts said.

“It is not unusual to get blasts of cold air well into July,” Baker said. “But that is not the rule, of course.”

June 12, 1947, was the latest into the season there was a trace of snowfall in Colorado, Baker said.
