MORRISON, Colo.—Federal regulators have proposed nearly $67,000 in fines for a bioenergy company, after a worker installing auger system components got his leg caught when the system unexpectedly began operating.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited Community Power Corp. in suburban Denver with two safety violations following the accident in February. The company says the injured employee has resumed working.

The company’s BioMax Modular Bioenergy System turns biomass into energy. OSHA alleges the company failed to develop procedures to control potentially hazardous energy when employees were working on the systems, didn’t adequately train workers on the procedures, and failed to implement a written program to adequately protect workers in enclosed spaces.

The company said Wednesday it will contest the citations and has new senior leadership, including a safety professional.
