The winner of the original U.K. season of “The Voice” sold only 895 copies of her debut, self-titled album in the first week since the album’s May 27 release.
Leanne Mitchell, 29, was signed to Universal after her first-season win in June 2012. But her performance in 2013 has placed her at a low No. 134 in this weekend’s official album chart.
One of the judges on the show, Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am, he wasn’t sure what happened directly after the show, but the process should have moved faster:
“I don’t think the rushing happened and if it did, it was too slow,” he said. “Especially in this day and age when everything changes every 20 seconds on Twitter. You go from something being hot to ‘Oh, it’s not hot anymore’.”
in March on how Mitchell had no tour, a sinking single — she only reached No. 45 with her cover of Whitney Houston’s “Run To You” — and as of then, still no album, even as the second season premiered. As mentions, her recent sales equate to one record for every 10,000 people who watched her win talent show.
Tom Jones, who was Mitchell’s coach on the show, also , but contrasted what will.i.am thought:
“I think they rushed it,” he said, when asked why he thought she has failed to make her mark. ‘The one problem is if you win ‘The Voice,’ itap out of your hands completely. Because you’re signed to Universal Records, with management, agency, the whole thing. So you can’t do much for that person after you’ve got that person to win. If you want to do something with them further, itap better that they don’t win.”
All nine winners of “The Voice” rival show, “The X Factor,” have recorded number one singles in the U.K.
