GREELEY, Colo.—The manager of the Greeley-Weld County Airport is talking with developers about possibly adding solar farms on unused airport property.
The Greeley Tribune reports ( ) manager Gary Cyr is entertaining two offers from companies seeking 25-year leases of airport property.
One proposal is from a developer bidding to build a 14-acre, 2 megawatt solar farm for Xcel Energy. Cyr says he would hope to save 10 percent on the airport’s roughly $40,000 annual electricity bill if that proposal goes through.
A second and private four-acre farm would produce about 0.5 megawatts.
Cyr says nothing has been decided yet.
The airport already has oil wells on its property that are expected to generate about $300,000 in revenue this year, down from more than $700,000 in 2011.
