COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Strong winds and heat are expected to test firefighters’ work to extinguish every last hot spot from Colorado’s most destructive wildfire.
The Black Forest Fire and much of the rest of the state is under a red flag warning Wednesday as crews work to finish containing the blaze. Crews have also been methodically criss-crossing the 22-square-mile burn area to put out hot spots and prevent flare ups that could endanger over 3,500 homes still standing there.
Incident commander Rich Harvey says firefighters “look forward to the test because it’s one we’ve been preparing for all week.”
The blaze has destroyed over 500 homes. A husband and wife in their 50s who worked for the Air Force were also killed in the fire—Marc and Robin Herklotz.
