Sometimes it seems the best way to get to know a band is by hearing it perform with just the basics. When came into town the night before kicking off their tour at the Hi-Dive on May 8, their drummer hadn’t yet made it to Denver. But the guys still performed for us in for a stripped-down and intimate session.
On record the Kansas band sounds like a garage rock group with a few folk influences. Driving drums, synth builds, feedback and vocal effects mark most of Hospital Ships’ songs. When we hung out with them in Denver, it was a completely different experience — just bass, acoustic guitar, keyboards and vocals. Suddenly you can hear some of the band’s strong influences from Neil Young and the Shins. It’s a nice change for Hospital Ships, who has been gaining traction on music blogs such as Consequence of Sound and Pitchfork.
We recorded four songs with the band, and you can listen to them and download them below. Also, the band’s album, “Destruction In Yr Soul,” was released this week.
