GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—The Colorado State Patrol says a motorcyclist from Vail has died after colliding with an elk.

The Daily Sentinel reports ( ) Timothy Parker was riding on Interstate 70 in Mesa County near the Garfield County line when his motorcycle struck an elk crossing the highway Saturday night. Troopers say Parker’s 2012 Harley Davidson had passed a vehicle and was returning to the right lane when it hit the elk, went off the right side of the road and struck a guardrail.

Parker was thrown from the motorcycle and died at the scene. The State Patrol says he wasn’t wearing a helmet.

Troopers say the elk wasn’t found.
