The rollout of the new Pecos Street bridge over Interstate 70 not only finished early but also proved to be a weekend highlight for some spectators.
More than 1,000 people visited the public-viewing area over the weekend to see the demolition of the old Pecos bridge, watch the 2,400-ton bridge into place and then catch the cleanup, Colorado Department of Transportation spokeswoman Mindy Crane said. CDOT reopened I-70 between Interstate 25 and Federal Boulevard at about 12 a.m. Monday, about 4½ hours ahead of schedule. Also, the new pedestrian bridge on the west side of Pecos Street is now open.
Pecos Street over I-70 will remain closed until late August or early September to allow crews to construct the roundabouts that will replace the traffic-signal intersections on Pecos Street.
