If you’ve heard the first song on ’s latest record, you’ll understand why she’s playing Denver’s on her upcoming tour.
Go ahead and listen to “Every Single Night,” the opening lullaby on Apple’s fourth record (the long-winded “The Idler Wheel is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do”) and you’ll hear the complex playfulness and intense, if occasionally child-like, switch ups. The song almost sounds symphonic, sans the strings, and so it makes sense that Apple will play the in-the-round home of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra on this next outing.
Apple will co-headline Boettcher on Oct. 11 with , part of their 12-date “Anything We Want” tour. Apple and Mills were asked to write three or four sentences about the show for the tour release, and here’s what they came up with:
1) We were sent an assignment to write three or four sentences.
2) These sentences should communicate that we, Fiona Apple & Blake Mills (that’s us), are doing a little tour as a duo.
3) We know it’ll be something special, and we aren’t being coy here — it’s just that we have about 26% of an idea of what the f*** we will be playing for you.
4) It was our understanding that the 4th sentence was optional, but here is something that is true: the uncertainty excites us.
Apple and Mills will play songs from each of their catalogs as well as new, unreleased material in what is being billed as a “collaborative performance.” Mills’ name isn’t as recognizable as Apple’s, but he’s an accomplished player, songwriter and producer who founded a band with the Dawes boys, played with Band of Horses, toured with Lucinda Williams and produced for Sara Watkins.
