DENVER—The company that runs the Grand Hyatt Denver hotel has been ordered to pay more than $55,000 in back wages to 52 temporary employees who worked as housekeepers.

The company, known as 1750 Welton Street Investors LLC, doing business as the Grand Hyatt Denver, used temporary employees from Xclusive Staffing as room attendants. The U.S. Department of Labor says an investigation found the businesses hadn’t paid the employees for the time spent working before or after their scheduled shifts.

KMGH-TV reported Wednesday ( ) that the department determined the workers arrived early to prepare their carts and stayed late to finish cleaning a required number of rooms. That extra time was not recorded or paid.

It also found the employees were not paid for working through meal breaks.

The hotel was also fined $8,000 and Xclusive Staffing was fined $3,500.

Grand Hyatt Denver issued a statement Wednesday saying it assisted the labor department in its two-year investigation and that it “can take the steps necessary to make sure these issues do not occur in the future.” It said “the satisfaction and well-being of our associates is fundamental” to the hotel’s success.
