GOLDEN —The Colorado School of Mines added a property to its campus with the purchase of the Jefferson County Environmental Health building on July 30.

According to Chris Cocallas, campus architect, the building will eventually house staff of the Colorado Geological Survey.

The 11,800-square-foot building at 1801 19th St., has been home to the county’s Environmental Health department. Mines purchased it for $900,000.

It was originally bought by the county in 1959 and goes by the name “The Climax” building.

County employees at the Golden site as well as clinicians and administrative personnel in Lakewood will be part of a migration to the Parfet building at 645/655 Parfet St.

It was purchased by the county in 2011 for this purpose for $2.3 million.

The move will take place in December, according to Mark Danner, facilities and construction management division director for the county.

Danner said there are 140 public health employees who will move to the Parfet building.

The county already owns the Remington building, at 11011 West Sixth Ave. which is adjacent to the Parfet Building. It is used for the county’s diversion, juvenile justice and probation services for Colorado’s First Judicial District.

The move has been part of a plan to consolidate facilities in the county for several years to control future costs and provide more efficiency in service delivery. The county owns 58 facilities spread over 774 square miles, according to county documents.

Cocallas said the inhabitants of the Mines’ building will be staff of the Colorado Colorado Geological Survey, who will move in at the beginning of 2014.

“There will be some other administrative function that might go in there, we aren’t sure yet,” he said. He estimated about 14 employees might make the move.

He said the purchase was made to better consolidate the campus.

“It completes the puzzle. It’s pretty decent. It’s advantageous for us and we’ll gain some space,” Cocallas said.
