Topping our picks of best Colorado shows this week are MGMT, Alt-J and more. We’ll be seeing you there, and if you don’t make it out, follow the music musings on our Twitter @RVRB and our selfies on Instagram @heyreverb.
4) Phish — Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, Aug. 30-Sept. 1
You have to admire Phish fans’ dedication to the band. There aren’t many fan bases that remember a particular part of a song played at one show during a tour 10 years ago and then have a recording of said song that they still listen to on repeat. I wouldn’t consider myself a Phish fan by any means, because that would require an undying love for the band, but I do respect any act that can create such a cult-following around its live performances. And this weekend at Dicks Sporting Goods Park is a pretty big deal in the world of Phish.
3) Chief Keef — Summit Music Hall, Sept. 1
It’s hard to tell if Chief Keef is interesting because of his troubles with the law (his “Legal issues” subheading on Wikipedia is longer than his “Musical career”), his personality, his celebrity friends or because he’s actually a good rapper. Either way, he occupies an interesting spot in the current pop culture conversation. Who will Chief Keef be? Most recently he had a rather heart-felt guest spot on Kanye West’s “Hold My Liquor” with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon. Perhaps it’s a sign of what’s to come from the young rapper, and you could be the first to see him at Summit Music Hall on Sept. 1.
2) MGMT — Fillmore Auditorium, Sept. 6
Itap been about three years since indie-psych duo MGMT has played in Colorado and just as much time since releasing a new album. This month both waits will come to an end as MGMT plays Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium on Sept. 6 then releases its third studio album on Sept. 17. MGMT has released a few new tracks in the last few months, each just as playful and out-there as you’d expect from the act that brought “Kids.” Maybe at the Fillmore shows, fans will hear more of the album a bit early.
1) Alt-J — Fillmore Auditorium, Sept. 5
Yeah, Alt-J was just in Denver in April, but Sept. 5’s show at the Fillmore Auditorium is on a much bigger scale. We’re talking nine times bigger. The English, Mercury Prize winning band brought a full house to the Bluebird in April — and an odd one at that of jam folks and nerdy hipsters — out to catch itap odd and complex harmonies and rhythms. If anything, Thursday’s second Denver appearance for Alt-J this year will give fans another chance to wrap their heads around what the band does live. Also, itap worth checking out how much the band has progressed during an intensive tour of music festivals and venues across the world.
