EAGLE — A gas leak scare forced the evacuation of homes and residents Saturday morning.
The odor of natural gas was reported about 11 a.m., and emergency crews detected high readings of flammable gas in an ally behind Wall and Washington between Third and Fourth streets.
Personnel with Eagle Fire Protection District, Eagle Police, Eagle County sheriff, Eagle Public Works, Gypsum Fire Protection District, Eagle County Paramedic Service and Source Gas helped in the evacuation of homes.
Investigators found high levels of gas only in the alley’s roadway. An area in the alley with the highest concentration of gas was uncovered down to the gas line, but there was no indication of a gas leak, fire officials said.
No houses in the area reported a gas odor, and test holes made in the back yards of several houses that backed up to the alley showed no indication of gas.
After high levels of gas dropped, residents were allowed to return to their homes, officials said.
