BOULDER — Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers on Friday evening killed a previously tagged male black bear that earlier in the day forced Flatirons Elementary School into lockout after being spotted nearby.
The bear, a male estimated to weigh 180 to 200 pounds, was seen at about 3 p.m. near the school, 1150 Seventh St. His presence temporarily forced the school into a lockout, during which no one left the building, but officials ultimately let students leave the school after determining the animal was confined to a tree in nearby Columbia Cemetery.
After several hours of trying to wait the bear out, in hopes he would head back to the foothills west of town, wildlife officials at about 6:30 p.m. put the animal down, according to Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman Jennifer Churchill.
“He was tagged about a month ago,” Churchill said. “He had a long history, and we had to put him down.”
