4) Riot Fest — Byers, Colo., Sept. 21-22, $99-$189
What more reason do you need to go to other than to see one of the Replacements’ first shows in 22 years? Well, there at least 10 more reasons to go — like Yo La Tengo, Guided by Voices, Blink-182, DeVotchKa, Matt & Kim, Iggy and the Stooges, Public Enemy, Superchunk… Anyway I’ll just stop here and see you at Riot Fest on Saturday and Sunday.
3) Savages — Bluebird Theater, Sept. 20, $15-$20
There’s been a lot of talk about ‘ punchy debut album “Silence Yourself.” The album from the moody, hard rocking London post-punk band has even been nominated for this year’s Mercury Prize. Led by the dark, theatrical croon of Jehnny Beth and the driven bass lines of Ayse Hassan the band will smack you in the face, then make you think about it for a little while.
2) The Weeknd — 1stBank Center, Sept. 20, $35-$50
The Weeknd’s Abel Tesfaye is a special kind of introvert. He shies away from the public spotlight but at the same time produces some of the most open and darkly honest music for the masses to hear. Call it neo-R&B. Itap this haunting, immense sound that comes off as if Marvin Gaye was a messed- up club rat. He has Michael Jackson’s falsetto with some of the finest production sense in popular music. And as his U.S. TV debut on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” attested, he can bring it live and hit those notes. The Weeknd plays Broomfield’s 1stBank Center on Sept. 20 with Banks.
1) FIDLAR — Larimer Lounge, Sept. 26, $13-$15
With songs like “Cheap Beer,” “Stoked and Broke” and “Wake Bake Skate,” you’d think you would know exactly what you’re getting with FIDLAR. And to an extent your preconceptions would be right about the L.A. skate-punk band: They like drinking, drugs, mayhem and rock. But onstage they are the furthest thing from slackers. Whereas most bands like this would just get messed up, not give a crap and play loud, FIDLAR takes care with its performing. The instrumentation is executed with precision, their energy is explosive and the snot-nosed attitude never gets in the way of the actual music. The band rocks the Larimer Lounge on Sept. 26.
