A kitchen fire, set off by grease, caused $40,000 in damage Thursday to a Westminster home.

The fire started about 5:40 p.m. in the 3300 block of West 94th Avenue, according to a media release.

When firefighters arrived at the one-story home light smoke was coming out of a roof-mounted swamp cooler.

Firefighters found a back door open and quickly dosed the kitchen fire, which had caused heavy damage in the room. Other parts of the house sustained smoke damage.

“Super-heated smoke” extended the fire, which was caused by cooking with grease, from the kitchen up into the swamp cooler, the release said.

Residents were outside the home before firefighters arrived. One was evaluated and treated at the scene by paramedics for smoke-related injuries. There were no other injuries.

A restoration company secured the property and the residents were given a hotel voucher and a check from the Westminster Firefighter’s Fire Victims Benefit Fund, the release said.
