A Colorado Medal of Honor recipient will be among the World War II heroes honored in a series of postage stamps.

The U.S. Postal Service announced this week that Army Pvt. George Sakato of Denver — one of nine living recipients from WWII — will be depicted in the materials included with a stamp released on Veterans Day. Sakato, 92, served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a unit formed from Americans of Japanese descent, many of whom had been held in detention camps during the war.

Sakato earned the medal, the nation’s highest award for battlefield gallantry, in 1944 when he led an assault on a German position in France. He braved enemy fire in a battle that saw him kill 12 of the enemy, according to his medal citation.

His medal was issued in 2000.

A California native, Sakato settled in Denver after the war and worked for the Postal Service.

The stamps will be unveiled at a ceremony at the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.
