A new film from ACLU of Colorado features a prisoner held in solitary confinement for 16 years, since he was 19 years old.

“Out of Sight, Out of Mind,” a that also was edited into a , is part of ACLU’s research on solitary confinement of the mentally ill.

Colorado inmate Sam Mandez, who is serving a life sentence for a crime committed when he was 14, speaks in the documentary along with mental health professionals.

“The best way I can describe solitary confinement is being buried alive,” says another inmate featured in the film.

The longer version of the documentary covers Mandez’s conviction, life sentence without parole, time in solitary and family interviews.
