DENVER—An explosion and fire on the roof of a Denver parking garage sent clouds of acrid gray smoke across downtown and left three people suffering from smoke inhalation.

The Denver Fire Department says the blaze took less than an hour to extinguish after it was reported at about 2 p.m. Tuesday. It was in the mechanical room on the top floor of a parking garage a few blocks from the state Capitol.

Fire officials say two people were treated at the scene and a third was taken to a hospital.

The parking garage is between a nine-story office building and the Warwick Hotel, but the fire did not spread to either of those buildings.

The cause is under investigation.
