LONGMONT — A Friday morning equipment failure knocked out gas service to about 7,200 Xcel Energy customers in parts of Niwot, Longmont, Boulder and the Gunbarrel area.

Early Friday evening, with temperatures dropping below zero, residents were being encouraged to leave their homes for warming centers.

To make matters worse, at about 8 p.m. Xcel reported a power outage that affected about 4,000 homes in the Niwot and Gunbarrel areas. That power was restored after 9 p.m., Xcel said, but most homes still were without natural gas.

Officials said the power outage was not related to the natural gas problems.
