STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The shopping sprint toward Christmas is over, but Steamboat retailers have the gift of incoming visitors to open this weekend.
Rod Schrage, owner of Ski Haus, said the pre-Christmas rush at his sporting goods store was good, but the real busy stretch starts now.
“The major influx of tourists will be the next 10 days,” Schrage said.
Very seldom does Ski Haus have a bad Christmas season, he said, and the good snow and accompanying excitement helped this year.
“Everything I hear is that we’ll be strong,” Schrage said about the upcoming 10 days.
The fact that Christmas and New Year’s fall on Wednesdays this year helps stretch out the visitor-fueled shopping longer, he said.
It splits the week up, according to Schrage, so that people are less likely to work right up until the holidays than they would be if Christmas and New Year’s fell on weekend days.
John Duty, of Bucking Rainbow Outfitters, said the period before Christmas was about average, but he expected business to track upward with the increasing number of visitors predicted for this weekend.
